How to start retinol without the drama

Retinol works when you keep using it. Here is a calm, week-by-week way to start — and stay with it.

Retinol is a form of vitamin A, and it is one of the best-known skincare ingredients for the look of fine lines and uneven texture. The catch: it only shows what it can do with consistent use. Most people who “quit retinol” did not quit because it failed. They quit because their skin felt dry or tight in the first weeks.

So the goal of week one is not results. The goal is comfort — a routine you will still follow in week eight.

A simple start plan

  • Weeks 1–2: two or three nights a week. Apply to clean, dry skin as the last step of your night routine.
  • Weeks 3–4: every other night, if your skin feels comfortable.
  • Week 5 onward: every night, if your skin is happy with it.
  • Every morning: sunscreen. Retinol can make skin more sensitive to the sun.

Why the base matters

A retinol cream with a rich, cushioned base — squalane, plant oils, conditioning proteins — keeps skin soft while you build up. That makes the difference between a jar you use and a jar you forget at the back of the shelf.

What to avoid in the first weeks

  • Do not stack several strong actives on the same night.
  • Do not apply around the eyes — use an eye cream made for that area.
  • Do not skip sunscreen, even on cloudy days.

If you are pregnant or nursing, ask your physician before you use retinol.
